ABCs of KM
Four facets of knowledge management
RealKM asked the actKM Forum the following question:
If someone came to you and said “I don’t know the first thing about what KM is, but I want to learn more about it – where should I start?”, what is the one resource (website, article or book) you would point them to?
The paper Knowledge Management Has Many Facets by Karl M. Wiig was one of the suggestions.
Wiig contends that the knowledge management (KM) field is large and complex, with the many different reasons for working with KM resulting in different ways to view the field. In consideration of this, he suggests that there are at least four distinctly different KM facets:
- KM as a Technology,
- KM as a Discipline,
- KM as a Management Practice and Philosophy, and
- KM as a Societal and Enterprise Movement.
