The top 100 most-discussed journal articles of 2019: Introduction
This article is part 1 of a series reviewing selected papers from Altmetric’s list of the top 100 most-discussed scholarly works of 2019.
As we’ve done in previous years, we once again take an end-of-year look at the open access works related to knowledge management from Altmetric’s list of the top 100 most-mentioned scholarly outputs published over the previous year.
To prepare the top 100 list for 2019, Altmetric tracked over 62.5 million mentions of 2.7 million research outputs covering the 365 days up to 15 November 2019.
Altmetric advises that while the list includes only works created by researchers, this year’s list is a departure from years past because it includes systematic reviews, researchers’ letters to the editor, case studies submitted to medical journals, and many other kinds of scholarly contributions. These changes were made to highlight the many ways that researchers can be influential through their scholarship, and Altmetric also hopes that these changes will bring attention to the fact that many factors can influence the attention that research receives.
